News and
Events ~ June 2008
News
from
the Society:
In Albany last August, our first annual
reunion focused not only on the history and
life in Craco, but also on the immigrant
experiences of our ancestors. This year,
we're taking these two very different worlds
and expanding upon them, providing an
opportunity for our members to walk in the
same steps that their ancestors did over 100
years ago! This month, nearly 50
individuals will be traveling to Craco, some
returning to their place of birth and where
they spent their childhood, others visiting
for the first time this land from which we
all descended. It promises to be a most
meaningful and emotional trip for all! Our
second annual reunion, August 15th - 17th,
will be held this year in the lower east
side of Manhattan, where a majority of our
ancestors first arrived and settled in the
"New World". Besides dining in of the some
best and most famous restaurants in the
"Little Italy" section of Manhattan, we will
visit the Tenement Museum, to gain an
important perspective of the living
conditions that our ancestors endured. We
will also conduct a walking tour of the old
neighborhoods where many Crachesi began a
new life for themselves and their children,
and attend the Mass and procession honoring
San Rocco. You can click on the photo below
to link to a video from last years' San
Rocco procession. Steven LaRocca (on
the right proudly carrying our beloved San
Rocco) is
a member
of the Craco Society, and also serves as
President of
The San Rocco Society.

The Craco Society, with the
cooperation of our friends in Craco,
was
able to obtain a copy of
the
RAI UNO
program "Festa Italiana"
segment entitled "L'Ultimo
Pastore di Craco" (The Last
Shepard of Craco) which aired on
March 20, 2008. By clicking on
the logo below, you can view
this interesting and beautifully
filmed piece. It is a rather
large clip, so please be patient
while it downloads. A link
to this video is also available
on our Media page.

One of our
Advisory Committee members recently made a
suggestion to expand our Cafe Press on-line
store to include a few more options for women's
fashion. Just in time for summer, we are
pleased to introduce two new shirts for the
ladies.

In addition,
everyone who registered for our inaugural trip
to Craco this month, received a Craco Society
logo tote bag. Now you can purchase one of
these stylish and functional totes and let the
world know where you ancestral roots
lie. They're the perfect carry-alls for our 2nd
annual reunion to be held August 15-17, 2008 in
NYC!
The May
newsletter of the
National Italian
American Foundation included a
mention of the Society and our June trip to
Craco along with information about the
August Reunion and a link to our website.
Hopefully, this will reach others who would
be interested in our efforts.

The
Corporate Communications group at
Bell Canada published an online article
explaining how the internet and the
conferencing feature have contributed to
the success of our Society.
This interesting article highlights Joe
Rinaldi, the Society’s President, and his
views about our mission.

Anna Lucia,
the archivist at the town hall in Craco, sent
an old print of the Madonna della Stella
from the 1950s which is attached. It
recognizes the contribution made by our
ancestors in the inscription on the sketch
is as follows:
MADONNA DELLA STELLA
ONORATA CON FESTA SOLENNE IN
CRACO
LA PRIMA DOMENICA DI MAGGIO
PER MEZZO DELLE OFFERTE DEI
CITTADINI CRACHESI INCOLI ED EMIGRATI NELLE
AMERICHE.
Madonna della
Stella, honored with a solemn feast on the
first Sunday of May, thanks to donations
made by the local Crachesi and those who
have emigrated to the
Americas.

The above photograph of the Processione of the
Madonna, circa 1967 was also forwarded to the Craco
Society from Anna Lucia. Does the
young lad located in the center foreground wearing
the shorts and sweater look familiar?

Mietere
grain

June is a busy month for cutting down all the grain and setting it aside
to be threshed in July.
Celebrate St. Anthony Day on June 13: children will be dressed in a monk cloak as a devotion to St. Anthony.
Will also bake small loaves of bread, take them to the church to
have them blessed, then give away to the poor.
The first figs called Fioroni or culummë
are picked.
